Going into last night's slate of NBA games very few fans had the Mavericks vs. Knicks game circled on their calendars. By the end of the night every NBA fan had their eyes glued to their screens as Mavericks star Luka Doncic put together possibly the greatest performance in the NBA's modern era. By the time the final horn sounded in Dallas, Doncic had finished with the first 60 point, 20 rebound, 10 assist triple-double in NBA history.
This statline is obviously absolutely absurd, but the way it happened is even crazier. The Mavericks were losing for the majority of the game, and with only 33 seconds left on the clock they were down by nine. It's nearly impossible to blow a nine point lead with 33 seconds to go, but if anyone was going to do it it would be the Knicks.
After a Spencer Dinwiddie dagger the Mavericks were only down three with just under ten seconds remaining. The Knicks of course fouled Doncic before he could put up a potential game-tying three, leaving him on the line. He knocked down his first free-throw before purposely missing the second hard off the back of the rim. What happened next is the kind of highlight that you tell your grand-kids about sixty years from now...
The Mavericks took control in overtime, and that's where Luka eclipsed the 60 point mark. It's so wild that when he does stuff like this we all act shocked, but honestly what did we expect. We should have known he was going to do something like this eventually, it's Luka magic after all. The craziest thing for me about this whole thing is that this is the first time this has ever been done. Not even Wilt was able to do something like this during his career. The only other player to have a 60 point triple-double is James Harden, and Luka had twice the rebounds that he had. This was really something only he could pull off, and unless he does it again somewhere down the line in his career we may never see this again.
If you watched this game and don't think that Luka is a top-three (probably top-one) player in the league, I don't know what to tell you. In addition to that, it is clear to see that if this guy had a better roster around him he would be competing for championships right now. He still has plenty of time, but if he were able to make serious moves in the playoffs he could start to build a legitimate resume for a spot among the top ten players of all-time by the time his career is over.
